To get the most out of your engine in terms of engine performance and to reduce costly repairs, you should ensure that it is properly maintained.
Following are our top 10 tips to keep your engine running at optimal efficiency.
1. Change the Oil Regularly
Routinely changing the oil is the most important thing you can do for your engine. Oil is the lifeblood of your engine so it makes sense to change it regularly.
Engine oil loses its protective lubricating qualities over time, so it is recommended that you change the oil at lease twice a year or every 15,000 kilometres depending on manufacturers recommendation.
2. Protect from Overheating
Extensive damage will occur to your engine if it gets too hot. You can prevent your engine overheating by maintaining an adequate amount of radiator fluid, or coolant in the engine. You should also routinely check to make sure that you have enough coolant. Check this level when the engine is cool and keep in mind if you are putting in alot of fluid in, you may have a leak somewhere.
3. Check for Leaks
Worn hoses begin to crack ad leak, and oil and antifreeze are two liquids that you don't want leaking out of your engine. Look under the hood to smell and look for leaks. You should also occasionally look under your car to see if anything is leaking on the pavement below.
4. Warning if "Check Engine" Warning Light
If your 'Check Engine' light comes on, you should not neglect it. Have the engine checked as soon as possible after the light is on. Act immediately if the warning light relates to your engine temperature or oil.
5. Replace the Fuel Filter
'Dirty' fuel can become an issue as harmful particules can build up in the gas and get into the engine. Replace the fuel fitler at proper intervals as it will keep buildup out of the engin.
6. Avoid Running Your Fuel Tank Dry
All sediment that collects at the botton of your fuel tank will be pulled into your engine if you constantly run your tank to eploy before filling up. It is generally recommended to refuel when your tank is half or quarter full.
7. Replace the Air Filter when necessary
Like fuel, air is critical for keepig your engine running. The air fitler keep clean air coming through by preventing dirt, bugs and other things from entering the engine. Eventually, the fitler will get dirty and clog up, so it is critical to get it replaced regularly.
8. Check You Belts
The belts under your connet run key components including the alternator, water pump, and fan. They typically last a last tie, but they are still a 'wear and tear' component. It is a good idea to do a visual check for cracks and noise problems can also indicate a belt problem.
9. Cease the Stop and Start Driving
Your engine will run better and last longer if it runs at a continuous speed as opposed to trying to getting the best 0-100km/h time off the line and then slamming on the brakes at the next light. Try to keep your RPMs at a consistent level and the result will be increased fuel efficiency and less wear on the engine.
10. Changing the Spart Plugs and Wires
It is critical to change your spark plugs before they get too old and start causing your engine to run rough. Manufacturers typically recommend that you replace the spark plus every 45,000 kilometres. Replacing them at the proper intervals will maintain your engines performance and fuel economy.
